Memorial Day 2012, USO Camp Buehring Kuwait
SPC Nicholas Orwig kneels down next to one of the 6,431 luminaries lit to commemorate each individual service member who has fallen since 2001.
This sea of lights in the Kuwaiti desert does not represent nameless faces or cold statistics, but fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, and friends. Today, both service members and civilians alike reflect on the impact their sacrifice has had. From the broader sense of the lives we enjoy as Americans, to the personal affect of losing someone you love. Today is a day of commemoration, gratitude, and a celebration of the freedoms those sacrifices represent.
As you light up the grill and share good times with those you care about, remember the men and women, as well as the families they have left behind, who have given meaning to this Memorial Day.
